ANZAC REVERIE 2023: my tribute and call to remembrance

THE OCCASION

#LestWeForget #ANZACDay #RemembranceDay

Three weeks ago, I realized that my newly acquired instrumental skills (guitar and mouth-trumpet) were perfectly suited to a rearrangement of ANZAC REVERIE, which I recorded acapella in 2021. I wasn't happy with that video production, so it's been nice to revisit and upgrade my presentation somewhat.

THE COSTUME

Costuming has always been a delight to me. I get a lot of fun out of it. My outfit for this performance consists of a shirt-dress and trench coat from my regular daywear, supplemented by a tie acquired for the occasion. I had to put in some serious study to get that thing tied. It's not a skill I've needed before.

I've also been practicing my hairstyling skills for a few weeks. It's been a while since I wrangled an up-do. Watching a few episodes of "Foyle's War" helped me along. I'm quite pleased with the outcome.

THE MUSIC

The melody by jazz trumpeter Nini Rosso is such a delight to sing, and the lyrics, which I wrote over a decade ago, seem to get more relevant with each passing year, especially as we see how many have sleepily forgotten the price of freedom. I hope my music will encourage you as you move forward in your journey awake and remembering.

ANZAC REVERIE lyrics by Narelle Worboys

Anzac Reverie

For you and me

At dawn and at nine,

Blasting storm or balmy shine.

Remember the ones who've gone before,

Praying for peace and fighting war.

Chorus:

For them not surrender, that easier peace price,

But defend freedom, uphold the right.

Who chose what's right and what free?

Above us the Highest Authority.

Anzac Reverie

For you and me

At noon, and when the light

Begins to fade into the night.

Remember the ones who've gone before,

The truth that they fought and died for.

Repeat Chorus

Anzac Reverie

For you and me.

Lest we, lest we forget.

Among the Street Performers in Napier: Introduction to Lovers and Haters of Buskers

Wonderful things happen when you walk around town wearing a guitar. It's been an extraordinary day.

Backing up two days, the owner of this borrowed guitar said I can keep it. How awesome is that! What a gift! 💕💕💕

That came about because I was inquiring about strap options so I can stand up to play - it's a classical guitar and didn't have strap buttons. Wearing a guitar opens up some interesting opportunities. I spent this afternoon in the Napier CBD exploring one of them.

Busking outside shops or just walking along the footpath, I noticed faces would light up when they saw the guitar. I made a lot more eye contact than usual, people responding to my smile. Somehow the guitar made me more visible, even if I wasn't playing it.

An elderly gentleman came in to #TheMusicMachine while I was there getting strap buttons installed on the guitar. His errand was to collect a vintage violin. He read the sign on my suitcase and asked for details on the form of my improvising.

"A cappella?" he said. "That means, to be sung in church."

I quickly translated the word in my head. "So it does. I'd never noticed that before."

The next thing he said was in Japanese, which he kindly translated as, "Keep doing what you're doing." I love going in to #TheMusicMachine -- I always come out feeling encouraged and affirmed as a musician. While I was there, Ben tidied up the flyaway ends of the guitar strings for me, so my next video will look more professional.

Wandering around town, I came upon Bob, a soprano saxophone player whose music had moved me very much when I first heard him about two months ago. I was delighted to make his acquaintance and tell him how his music had impacted me. He gave me some tips about selecting a good spot.

Look at these gorgeous Art Deco buildings! How amazing to be able to perform in a "venue" with such a view. But I didn't choose this spot with forethought. It kind of chose me. I started off across the road at Adore Collection, drawn to the 1936 rickshaw parked outside, then noticing the luxury handcrafted nature of the shop wares on display, which felt like a good fit for my particular music skills. #NarelleCustomSongs #ImprovArtist

I courteously went inside to ask the manager if it was okay for me to busk outside her shop. She turned out to be the owner. Her reply came as a shock.

She told me, "No, it's not okay. Shop owners hate buskers. They prevent customers coming in and reduce our sales. We have proof. I don't want you in front, not even next to my shop. If you go anywhere else, make sure you get permission."

Puzzled, I asked, "How do buskers prevent customers from coming in?"

"People won't walk near them because they feel guilty for not giving them money."

This seemed very strange (if I want to go into a shop, I go into a shop), but I thanked her for explaining. Had she experienced belligerent buskers? A few years ago, some of the beggars were belligerent, but surely she wasn't confusing the two.

As I turned away, she asked, "Do you have a license?"

"Yes, I have a permit."

"You'll get removed if you don't."

I exited feeling nonplussed, and stood outside wondering what to do next. I nodded to the beggar who was watching me from his position sprawled on the ground outside the next shop down, one of five "un-buskers" I saw today who don't work for what they get.

Was it really true, what Madame Adore had said? Maybe I should make a YouTube video about it; I want to canvass this idea.

A man spoke up from behind me. "Worboys," he said, having read the sign I was towing behind me. "Do you know Neil Worboys?"

Neil of Hogsnort Rupert fame and Wellington Heads (among other band names). "Yes! He's my Dad's cousin!"

It turned out that my new friend's wife used to perform with Neil in one of those bands.

Bob (hero name of the day), himself an able musician, said to me, "I heard what the shop owner said to you. She was very rude. I left the shop because of it."

Interesting. Shop owner lost herself that customer.

"My wife will want to meet you," Bob said. "She's shopping across the street."

That's how I came to be standing outside Just Jeans wearing a guitar. Cathy's face lit up when she saw me. She completed her shopping and soon joined us outside. After a lovely musical natter, they asked where I was going to busk.

"Here is fine," I said, "if they'll let me." I went inside to ask. The two lovely young shop assistants at the counter looked very surprised at my question, and granted permission without hesitation.

I set up outside well clear of the doors and performed a set, with my new friends standing some distance off. When I paused for a break, they returned to give me some welcome feedback on my voice and performance. It was clear to me it was coming from people with a lot of experience in the music and teaching industry.

Thanking them, I said, "If that situation hadn't occurred across the road, we wouldn't have met. I'm so glad we did!"

Cathy said as they departed, "I'm going over to tell her what I think of that."

I laughed. "I'll wait for the explosion."

Commencing my next set, I saw my champions exit Adore very soon. They sent me a big, cheery wave as they walked away.

I went busking today because I thought it would help me meet nice people. It certainly did. They made my day special. ❤️

Lyrics:

HERE'S A HAND, MY TRUSTY FRIEND
A New Old Lang Syne

Here's a hand, my trusty friend,
And giv's a hand of thine.
We'll cheer and lift each other up
As we journey on through time.

For growing days and joyful ways,
Through truth and love divine,
We'll cheer and lift each other up
As we journey on through time.

Lemonade Impromptu with Narelle Worboys and "New Friend"

Somebody once said, "When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade." This evening when I found myself left with a lemon, I decided to put some coconut, banana, and pineapple with it and see how it tasted.

Cheers!

It's a Rap!!! SOCK IT, BUDDY! Punches Out Strong Message for Mental Health

Introducing SOCK IT, BUDDY! a custom song to celebrate Kiwi Thanksgiving this Labour Weekend.

I hope this video will serve as a fun reminder for you and your family that your thoughts control your happiness and wellbeing. You have the power to change your thoughts, and that can change your life. #AsYouThinkSoYouAre #MentalHealthIsImportant

The poet and humourist in me have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the medium of rap. Rhyme-smithing was admirably modelled to me in my youth by the famous poet of light verse, American Ogden Nash. I have used one of his techniques to create a rhyme for 'ugly'.

FUGLY is an original word coined for this rhetoric. I have been warned that my word has been heard spoken in coarse street lingo. That would be somebody else's coined word, somebody with a less elevated mindset.

Here is the source of my word. The dictionary definition of FUG is the stuffy atmosphere of a poorly ventilated space; also a stuffy or malodorous emanation. I added the "ly" describer suffix, and voila! *fugly*, a word very useful in detailing the nature of unhealthy thought patterns.

Blessing you to discover more of the power within you, in Jesus name.

BOUTIQUE NARELLE: Hair Styling Tip

Want your braids to look thicker?

If you like the look of braids, but not how skinny your own braids turn out, here's a tip I learned from braiding expert Lilith Moon.

I know it looks like I've got a full head of hair, but actually I don't. My hair is very fine, but in its fluffy or curly state it looks bulky because of the volume created by the various waves and curls (so far I've counted three types of curl on my head). If I braided my hair firmly, the volume of the delicate curls would disappear under the pressure and the result would be skinny braids.

Lilith's braiding tutorials (sample here) showed me how to braid to below my chin, then holding the ends loosely and working from base to top, tug gently upward on each loop of the braid to spread out the bulk a little. Repeat as necessary until you've got the bulk you want without the ends pulling free, then secure the tail with a band. Voila! Plump braids!

Custom Song: Farm Alarm

Creating "Farm Alarm" for Groundswell NZ's "Howl of a Protest"

A wee farm doggie started this song project. I saw her standing on the wheel of a tractor, snowy mountains in the background, howling at one end of her and wagging at the other. Her master had encouraged her to practice in preparation for a special town visit to protest unworkable legislation pressed upon farmers, growers, and trades service providers.

I thought, "I could do that. With a little coaching from her, I reckon I could howl like that."

I had less than three days before the event. I decided to test my system and see if I could write a song and upload a video of it within that short time.

I can't say I'll willingly put that kind of pressure on myself again, but my system handled it, I did what I set out to do, I had a lot of fun doing it, and it's been a great confidence booster.

As always, the costuming aspect was great fun. The Kiwi Stockman oilskin coat with comfortable brushed cotton lining is a treasure from my youth, the first expensive clothing item I bought for myself, age 16. On wet days, winter and summer, it kept my upper half dry on my paper delivery route. I recall the only alternative at that time was the thick and prickly Swanddri pullover wool bushshirt.

A few years later, my globetrotting sister brought the Australian Akubra hat home across the Tasman Sea for me. In those days before the internet, I would see Kiwis wearing this type of hat but didn't know where they bought them. Having a personal shopper offer to stuff her suitcase for me was a fabulous opportunity.

Thus kitted out in my retro outdoor gear, with many happy memories of living on these beautiful islands, I sung my song for everyone who needs the land in order to survive and flourish. Which is everyone, right?

I hope you enjoy my little howler.

"FARM ALARM"©
Lyrics by Narelle Worboys [Tune of Baa Baa Black Sheep]

[Howl]

Old MacDonald had a farm,
But it's been stolen. We're alarmed.
Thieves are locking up our land.
Regulations out of hand.
Growing food is being banned.
Howl a protest -- save our land.

[Howl]

Young MacDonald grew some fruit,
But pickers cannot pick the loot.
Ma MacDonald cannot shoot
Pigs and rabbits not so cute.
Rules of reason have been canned.
Howl a protest -- save our land.

[Howl]

Baa baa black sheep can't have wool
'Cause farming isn't workable.
Tradies cannot drive a ute --
Charge disaster down that route.
For our country we all stand.
Howl a protest -- save our land.

[Howl]

Orientation Day!

Today I met with the owner of Newsong Studios in Hastings, and he showed me around his domain. I'd just completed writing a new song a couple of hours earlier, and was invited to give a demo complete with unusual sound effects, which we all enjoyed. While it's great that technology enables me to create quick music videos and share them with my audience online, this was a reminder that live music connecting music giver and receiver in the same moment contains a dynamo that I've missed. Something needs to be done about that...

MY COMMITMENT TO YOU: making my dream come true

I spent Anzac Weekend at a musicprenuer bootcamp. 🥵🌟 I am not the person I was a week ago.

The last week of April marked the beginning of a new journey for me. I'm choosing to walk into my destiny to live in my true value and make my dream come true.

My commitment to you is that from today, I'm going to do something to work on my dream six days a week. You have my permission to check in with me and say, "How are you doing with your commitment? Are you still working to make your dream come true?"

I don't know yet what the end result will look like, but I do know that today I have to change some things for that to happen. One of those is narrow my focus. Something has got to go.

For thirteen years on Boutique Narelle (www.BoutiqueNarelle.blogspot.com) I've been giving away my knowledge and expertise for free. I knew I should monetize it, but I didn't know how. Every time I tried, I got bogged down in the systems and technology skill it demanded.

Today I'm saying🤚THAT'S IT, no more labouring to create value for other people _without being rewarded for it._

After four years of not having broadband internet, now that I suddenly do 🥳🥳🥳 #happydance, I've realized that my focus has switched -- from fulfilling the service that I have enjoyed bestowing through the Boutique Narelle blog and curated mall, to my song-writing passion which will bring me better reward for the time and energy I put into it. What this will look like on Boutique Narelle, I don't know right now.

I suggest that you follow me on the social media platform I currently use (www.facebook.com/NarelleWorboys), where you can see and get involved with my music journey, and of course details of my outfits and fashionista fun exploring beautiful modest fashion, because that's still me to the core.

I'm reminded of the quote, "BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD." I'm making space for me to visualise what that will look like for me. Maybe my doing that will inspire you to keep pursuing your dream, to be the change that you want to see in the world. I would love to hear that you're doing that.

Watch LIVE Piano Improvisations by Narelle

MY PIANO IS BACK!

I'm exploring a new place with my music. Wonder of wonders! miracle of miracles! I'm able to play the piano again, but now the way I play is different.

I put my hands on the keyboard and simply start playing. Most times I discover a unique melody as I go. You can watch me do this live in my youtube playlist here.

If soothing, uplifting music is what you're looking for, I hope you'll enjoy experiencing this journey with me.

Singing and playing at the same time is something I'm working on. You can view my breakthrough moment for that in my version of "Hallelujah".
